Ganesh Chaturthi 2021 will be celebrated on Friday 10 September this year. The Festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. It is one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this day Lord Ganesh took birth and is considered the important day to worship him.
As per religious books, the Lord Ganesha, also known as Vighnaharta, was born on Shukla Chaturthi during Bhadrapada Lunar month.
Ganesh Chaturthi History/ Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated
One day Lord Shiva went to a place called Bhogavati. Goddess Parvati was alone in Kailash. At that time the desire for a child arises in her mind. He collected the scum of his body. By making the shape of a child out of that scum, he honored his life. Devi said to that child that from today you are my son. Now I am going inside the cave for a bath. Don’t let any man come in.
Following the orders of Goddess Parvati, Ganesha started guarding the outside of the cave. Then Lord Shiva returned from Bhogavati and came to Kailash. When Lord Shiva wanted to go inside the cave, Ganesha blocked his way. Lord Shiva became angry with Ganesha for preventing him from going inside. Lord Shiva asked Ganesha to let me go inside or else I will separate your head from your body. Despite this, Ganesha stood by blocking the path of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva got angry with this and separated the head of Ganesha from his body with his trident. When Goddess Parvati came to know about this incident, she came crying to Lord Shiva and said – O Lord, in your absence I had created a child from my filth. Why did you cut his head?
When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he ordered his ganas that whatever mother is sleeping with her back towards her child. Bring his child’s head. In the forest, an elephant was sleeping with its back towards its child. The ganas of Lord Shiva reached Kailash with the head of the elephant. Then by putting on the head of an elephant, Lord Shiva revived Ganesh Chaturthi. Since then, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month.
