Mayawati Ashram: A Spiritual Place in Himalayas Foothill

Mayawati Ashram is situated at an altitude of 1940 meters, it is about 22 km from Champawat and 9 km from Lohaghat. Mayawati shot into prominence after the Advait Ashram was established here.

Ashram a symbol of greenery and peace

Mayawati Ashram is situated in the lap of Himalayas. There is a lot of greenery and peace here. Different types of flowers have been planted in the ashram, which always give fragrance to the environment here. Green trees and dense forests all around add to its beauty. There are old tea gardens in Mayawati’s Advaita Ashram. On request, the ashram also provides accommodation to people coming from outside so that people do not have to face troubles. Mayawati Ashram also has a library and a small museum.

The ashram attracts spiritualists from all over India and abroad. Amid an old tea Estate, is the Advait Ashram of Mayawati. During his third visit to Almora in 1898, Swami Vivekanand decided to shift the publication office of ‘ Prabuddha Bharat ‘ from Madras ( Chenni ) to Mayawati ( Champawat ) , from where it has been published since then . The only presence that has become a part of the peace and solitude of Mayawati, is that of the mighty Himalaya in all its splendor.

Today it publishes the original writings of Vivekananda. As an ashram dedicated to the study and practice of Advaita Vedanta, no images or idols are worshipped there, not even of Ramakrishna; and no images were kept in the premises according to the Ashram ideals set by Vivekananda.

Snow Season

If you are planning to visit the place during winter season you can feel the chilled weather and snow-covered peaks which will for sure attract your eyeballs.

In the year 1901, a small library was established here, in which there is a collection of books written on many subjects including Swami Vivekananda’s life, thoughts, philosophy, spirituality and yoga. In the year 1903, Mayawati Ashram also created a charitable hospital in which free medical aid is provided to the poor people nearby. This hospital is no less than a boon for the villagers of Lohaghat, Champawat today. The best doctors from all over the country and abroad come here for service. The people here benefit a lot. In the ashram, there is also a Dharamshala facility for the guests coming from outside.
